Tommie C. B. (Blackledge) De Assis attended OSU and finished a 6 year commitment with the Ohio Army National Guard. She was discharged as Sergeant (E-5) in 1993, the same year she graduated from OSU. She got a BA in East Asian Literature and Language and Linguistics (English). She landed a job as Sales Manager at the OSU Computer Store. She worked there until Unie 1995 and went on her way to her birthplace (Hiroshima, Japan) on the JET Programme (Japan Exchange for Teaching). She taught in this program for 3 years and decided to stay. She's now working for a private boys school teaching grades 7-12.
During her tenure with JET, she had a chance to travel to many different countries: Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Guam and Brazil. During her time in Japan, she's met people from many different cultures, including what may be considered a bizarre chance to learn about Brazilian culture. Many Brazilian-Japanese have repatriated to Japan, so there is a large community there. She met her husband Luis, who is Brazilian-Japanese. They recently got married in Hawaii on March 21, 2000. They still reside in Hiroshima and are not glowing from radiation, but from happiness!
They speak their own creole mixture of English-Japanese-Portuguese. Tommie and her husband enjoy camping and driving in the summer and snowboarding in the winter. They will be moving in the summer of 2003 from Japan to Sao Paulo, Brazil where Tommie's husband will join his brother in running their family's auto-body repair business. They have a new addition to the family, a baby boy -- Stephen Robert, was born on August 28, 2002. Tommie can be reached at: email@example.com
